A TMS-datasource (Treasury Management System) is predefined or custom SQL script that retrieves data from the TMS database. These custom scripts can be written by the vendor, consultant or client.
These TMS-datasources are incredibly powerful and save significant time. They provide instant access to the specific TMS data—when you need it.
Let’s dive into a real-life use case to see their impact on Treasury Operations:
🟩 The Challenge
You have 100s or 1000s of short term loans outstanding.
Every week, you need to provide the accounting team with an overview of internal loans expiring in the next 4 weeks.
🟩 But here’s the catch
- Only certain loans with deal types LN-1 and LN-2 (example) are in scope of this report.
- Overview should include the actual balance of the loan.
- You want this process to be consistent and accurate—no missed deadlines or human error.
🟩 Manual Approach
When you would execute this task manually every Friday, you need to:
1. Run a manual report in your TMS for loans, copy it to Excel.
2. Filter for loans of deal types LN-1 and LN-2 with maturities within 4 weeks.
3. Format the data, and email it to the team.
The time spent: about 30 minutes per week.
The risks: delays during busy periods or if someone’s on leave.
🟩 Automated Solution with custom data sources
You can also automate this process:
For a client, I developed and implemented a custom TMS-datasource that:
- Filters loans directly from your TMS loan database for LN-1 and LN-2.
- Identifies loans with a maturity date less than 4 weeks from today.
- Looks up the actual balance of the loan.
This TMS-datasource runs automatically every Friday at 3 PM, powered by the TMS scheduler, and sends the results directly to the processing team.
🟩 The Results
▫️ Time savings: No more weekly 30-minute tasks. Over a year, that’s more than 26 hours saved!
▫️ Consistency: Never miss a report, even during busy times or team absences.
▫️ Efficiency: Your team can focus on high-value tasks instead of repetitive work.
▫️ Additional possibilities: If you would like the accrued interest included in the report or an overview of all drawings and repayments, it can easily be added without any issue.
🟩 This is just one example of how leveraging custom TMS-datasources in the TMS can revolutionize your processes. Ready to take the leap into automation? Let's make it happen!
